Front Line Defenders, a Channel grantee partner, announced the five winners of the 2023 Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk on May 23, 2023 at a ceremony in Dublin (see video below).
The awardees included Olivier Bahemuke Ndoole of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Segundo Ordóñez of Ecuador, Jeany ‘Rose’ Hayahay from the Philippines, Hala Ahed from Jordan, and Digital Security Lab Ukraine. Olive Moore, the Interim Director of Front Line Defenders, congratulated the awardees stating that “this year’s laureates are a courageous and inspiring group of people who reflect the determination, dynamism and diversity of human rights defenders (HRDs) who are on the front lines of fighting for a more just world.”
The Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk shines an international spotlight on human rights defenders “who are courageously making outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of the human rights of others, often at great personal risk to themselves.” The award hopes to empower these human rights defenders and those they fight for, providing awardees with a cash prize, protection grant, and support from FLD on security and advocacy.
