On September 19, 2023, Cristi Hegranes, President and CEO of Global Press, a long time Channel grantee partner, released her new book Byline, a “call to action for journalists, publishers, funders and news readers alike.”

Byline focuses on the importance of local journalists in reshaping the image and rebuilding trust in international journalism. The book contains “tangible ways we can all contribute to an equitable and inclusive future for journalism”, including stories and lessons from Hegranes years of work with Global Press Journal and interviews with important figures in journalism such as Nicholas Kristof, Carroll Bogert, Bobby Ghosh, and Lauren Williams.

Global Press works directly with women from around the global, recruiting them into a 16-week training-to-employment program that educates them about investigative journalism. After the program, the recruits are offered full-time, paid positions and work as reporters for Global Press Journal, which emphasizes four core values: dignity, diversity, transparency and excellence. These core values are exactly what what Hegranes emphasizes in Byline rather than traditional parachute journalism. It is not just what is being reported that is important but who is doing the reporting. Local women’s voices, particularly those from traditionally marginalized communities, increase diversity not only in thought but perspective and insight.

Along with the book release, Hegranes announced a book tour “designed to elevate the incredible work being done across the nonprofit news ecosystem.” Key stops on the book tour include Seattle, New York, and Washington DC. In Seattle, Hegranes appeared on King5 Seattle New Day to advertise and discuss her new book.

Byline takes an important role in supporting Global Press meet its revenue and brand goals. All royalties from Byline will go directly to Global Press.
